Extreme Makeover

Hi, the reason for not posting on the blog is that we spend our free time organising our wedding: 6 months to go... :-)
Salut, on n'a pas écrit récemment car on passe note temps libre à préparer le mariage. Plus que 6 mois!

Our life changed on so many levels: new country, new jobs, new house, new friends, new seasons... and we decided to push it even further by getting a new health by changing our bad eating habits.
Notre vie a changé sur tellement de niveaux: nouveau pays, nouveaux boulots, nouvelle maison, nouveaux amis, nouvelles saisons... De plus, nous avons décidé de se construire une nouvelle santé en changeant nos mauvaises habitudes alimentaires.

Stijn's great transformation

He lost 14kg so far in 1 year. Wow, back-off girls, he is (soon) mine! When comparing these pictures today, Stijn pushed me to go for a 5km run saying: "Never again! We will not let it happen again... "

Il a déjà perdu 14kg en 1 an. Pas touche les filles, il est à moi! En voyant cette photo, Stijn a sauté dans ses vêtements de sport et nous a motivé pour aller courir 5km. Il a dit: "Plus jamais! On ne va jamais redevenir comme ça..." 

Nina's makeover:

22 kg lost so far in 18 months (18kg in the last year). I wear the same sweater to capture the difference.
22 kg de perdu jusqu'à présent en 18 mois dont 18 cette dernière année. Ce sont les mêmes pulls pour comparer.

I had to make 5 thinner holes in my belt. J'ai percé 5 trous pour retrecir ma ceinture.

Je ne savais pas choisir. Quelle photo avant-après est la meilleur?

Our secrets?
No crazy diet = better for long term changes; we eat 4x less than before; better quality of food (less sugar/carbs, less processed food = less seed oils/ unsaturated fats); we keep it balanced and interesting; we keep track of our weekly progress on an Excel document to stay focussed; we give ourselves some small goals we celebrate; we move a little bit more... The warmer climat might help.

Pas de régime spécial = mieux au long terme; on mange 4x moins; meilleure choix d'aliments (moins de sucre/féculents, moins de produits industriels= moins d'huiles de graines/ huiles insaturées); garder équilibré et intéressant; rester motivé en notant nos progrès dans un document Excel; on se donne des petits buts qu'on célèbre; on bouge un peu plus... Le climat aide aussi.

 Now we need  new cloths! On a désormais besoin de nouveaux vêtements.

Hiking: volcano of Mount Ngungun

We went to the Glasshouse Mountains (Sunshine Coast) to walk to the top of one of those old volcano chimny. The trail is short but intense as we had to use roots to pull ourselves up and jump from rocks to rocks what is hard work at almost 30°C!

Nous avons enfin été vers les Glasshouse Mountains à la Sunshine Coast pour grimper l'un de ces vieux volcans. Cette marche n'était pas très longue mais intense car nous devions utiliser les racines et les rochers pour grimper vers le sommet. Dur dur à presque 30°C!

There are some caves created by lava and gas.

Nous passons des grottes créées par la lave et des cheminées de gaz.

Walking on the top edge is quite impressive. You need to be sure about your footing.
Marcher sur la crête de cette montagne est impressionnant. Il fait être sur de ses pas.

 Every single drop of sweat was worthy to reach the top of Mount Ngungun. What a view!
Chaque goutte de sueur valait bien l'arrivée au sommet pour admirer la vue!

Recemment, nous avons vraiment été occupé à explorer, c'est pourquoi nous n'avons pas été très actifs sur le blog. Nous avons désormais beaucoup à raconter.

Hiking

Stijn et moi avons commencé à faire du trekking (=marches) tous les week-ends ce qui nous donne une opportunité d'explorer des nouveaux endroits, de découvrir des paysages à couper le souffle, de venir à la rencontre d'animaux sauvages et de faire de l'exercice... Que demander de plus?

Stijn and I started hiking every weekend: It's a perfect way to explore new areas, discover breathtaking views, encounter unique wildlife and exercise. What else do you need?




Je vous conseille un livre avec toutes les marches des environs. Ce livre donne des précisions sur la durée, du niveau de difficulté et autres détails pratiques: "Take a walk in South-East Queensland"

I recommend you a book with all trails and walks in the area. It informs you about the level of difficulty, how to stay on track and details about your surroundings. "Take a walk in South-East Queensland"

Chaque marche est différente avec ses propres surprises. Nous sommes allés aujourd'hui dans la forêt pluviale (jungle) du Mont Nebo dans la parc national D'Aguilar.

Each hike is different even the ones in the same area. Today we went in the rainforest at Mount Nebo in the large "D'Aguilar National Park" for the "Morelia walking track".

Whatch your steps!

Suivre le sentier peut sembler simple mais peut se révéler être demandant et dangereux mais toujours amusant! Regardez où vous posez les pieds sans oublier de lever le nez pour observer ce qui vous entoure. Ce serait dommage de rater ce qui se cache à côté de vous. Voici ce que nous avons croisé:

Walking on those tracks can still be challenging or dangerous but always fun! Watch your steps but don't forget to look around. It would be sad to miss what is hidden just next to you. Here is what we encountered today:

1) Des chenilles énormes/  Huge caterpillars:

2) Des sangsues / Leeches:

Elles se laissent tomber des arbres avec la pluie. Stijn les a collectionnées... Pour une fois que ce n'est pas moi qui attire les insectes! Vérifiez vos jambes régulièrement car elles anesthésient la plaie pour que la morsure passe inaperçue. Voilà le résultat... Elles injectent un anticoagulant ce qui est assez désagréable.

Leeches fall from trees when it is rainy. Stijn got plenty on him today... For once that I'm not the one attracting insects! Remember to check your legs because they secret an anaesthetic ensuring the bite goes undetected. They inject an anticoagulant what gives this result.

3) A PYTHON!!!!

Au dernier moment, juste avant de mettre mon pied à qq cm de lui, je me suis rendue compte que non, ce n'est pas une branche mais bien un python de 1m50 dormant au bord du sentier.

I realised just before putting my foot at  a couple of cm from it, that it wasn't a branch but a 1m50 long python! He was chilling on the track.

Brrrrr...

Wild visitors

Today we heard noise on our balcony and we saw a hungry fluffy possum feeding on birds seeds. I noticed that I needed to refill it more often than usual... We found our guilty.

Aujourd'hui, nous avons entendu du bruit sur le balcon, c'était un gourmand opossum tout velu qui mangeait les graines pour oiseaux... Il me semblait bien que le bol se vidait bien vite dernièrement!

It's such an amazing animal! This brushtail possum is in the family of marsupials. Do we see her pouch on the picture? They make a disturbing noise like a ghost breathing on the phone... Not that I've heard it before...

Ce brushtail possum est magnifique. C'est aussi un marsupial, voit-on sa poche sur la photo? Ils font un bruit flippant: c'est comme si un monstre respirait au téléphone... Non pas que j'ai déjà vécu cette expérience...

La mystérieuse enveloppe

Avant que nous quittions la Belgique pour l'Australie, Sarah, notre amie et ancienne collègue nous a donné une enveloppe à n'ouvrir qu'en cas de mal du pays. Un geste super adorable!
Je ne vous raconte pas la tête des déménageurs qui nous ont demandé le contenu de l'enveloppe et on a certifié que tout était légal et non organique... en refusant de l'ouvrir!
A friend gave us an envelope before we left Belgium to Australia wich we could only open if we were homesick. It's not easy to cross the border with a mysterious envelope...

Je suis certaine que Sarah attend notre réaction avec impatience après tous ces mois passés loin du pays. On n'avait pas expérimenté de vrai manque du pays car on est bien occupé à découvrir des nouvelles choses jusqu'à l'arrivée des fêtes de fin d'année... Moments à passer en famille et c'est alors qu'on a été chercher notre mystérieuse enveloppe.
We felt homesick during the holiday season because we are so far from our beloved ones: Let's open our package...

It's so funny: sorry for the non-French speakers...

It's air from Belgium captured in a bottle to make our mind work to remember waffles, chocolate, mussels and fries...

On ne l'a pas encore ouvert: On réserve notre bouffée d'air belge en cas d'urgence! C'est super adorable, ça nous a bien fait rire et remonté le moral. Merci Sarah! So cute!

On a aussi beaucoup apprécié ta carte de Noël: Photo de la Grand-Place de Bruxelles décorée! Tout bon! Merci à tout ceux et celles qui nous ont écrit ou envoyé une surprise. On a été très touché. Vous nous manquez tous... Vite le flacon!

Voici une photo d'un bébé kangourou/ Walabi (= un joe) prise lorsque je "travaillais" au zoo comme bénévole.

La mère, un walabi albinos, porte son joe dans sa poche (petite tête brune). Si vous venez en Australie, il FAUT voir les parcs animaliers où on caresse les kangourous! Hooo ça me manque déjà...

Australia Day: Party time!!!

Today it's Australia Day (see website)

It is not the discovery day by James Cook (May 1770). We celebrate today, 26/01, the biggest annual civic event of the year: the Foundation day of Australia when British arrived with proclamation of the British Sovereignty in 1788 to establish a penal colony. The settlement of Western Europeans actively started. Read the full story here.

Australians love to express their pride and patriotism during this special day.

Program of the day is a BBQ with friends who are living as well their first Australia Day!

What are Australians doing on this date?
- Following the presentation of the Australian of the year in Canberra.
- Following the speech of the Prime Minister and Governor.
- Following the announcement of honour list of the Order of Australia
- It is the day where people become citizen of Australia

What are real Australians doing?

Not everybody enjoys Australia Day

This celebration teases a sensitive topic for Aboriginals, Indigenous people because the British settlement means "Invasion day" or "Survival day" what has not been smooth on native tribes owning and managing this land for more than 40,000 years. Recently politics and communities are proactively willing to include native populations to celebrate the beautiful Australia together but for others, the wound is still bleeding and protesters are reminding the rest of the nation that their situation is still problematic and the date is Aborigines "Mourning day".

Voyage-voyage: Part 2_ La vie sous les tropiques

Eco-tourisme: Grande barrière de corail, nous (re-)voilà!
Great Barrier reef here we are (again)!

Nous retentons l'aventure avec, cette fois çi, réservations en main pour le long weekend de la nouvelle année. Nous avons roulé en ligne droite jusque la ville de 1770 et Agnes Waters (toujours à 6h30 de la maison) pour loger dans un hotel pour backpakers hippies super chouette: The Southern Cross Backpackers. Pas mal pour du tout le décor Balinais! On y a passé la nuit de la Saint-Sylvestre où nous nous sommes écroulés dans nos lits (supperposés)... avant minuit.

For the long weekend of New Years Eve, we went back to the Town of 1770 (still 6h30 drive) with booking this time. We slept in a cool hippie backpacker hostel, the Southern Cross Backpackers. We felt being in Bali. We spent the New Year's eve there and fell asleep in our (bunk)beds before midnight...

On y a fait une rencontre du troisième type avec l'insecte le plus grand d'Australie... Le Titan stick insect (Phasme titanesque)... oh, une buche qui bouge...

2012 commence pour nous sur l'Océan en direction de l'île Lady Musgrave au Sud de la Grande barrière de corail. Notre croisière romantique était un peu plus agitée que prévu. C'est sur une mer démontée que nous avons fait la traversée où la puissance des vagues ont eu raison des estomacs sensibles. Stijn et moi n'avions aucun problème et devions chanter pour couvrir le bruit de nos co-passagers... Nous étions trempés jusqu'aux os, j'étais à deux doigts de mettre mon masque de plongée (à cause de l'eau de mer... rien d'autre je vous rassure).  

We started 2012 on a cruise to Lady Musgrave Island (South of the Great barrier reef). Our romantic cruise was bumpier than planned. Half of the passengers were sick. Stijn and I had no problem but we had to sing to block the noise... We have been wet by waves all the way. I almost put my snorkelling mask on. It was fun.

Des oiseaux nidifient sur l'île. Ils sont tellement nombreux. C'est magnifique.
Plenty of birds are nesting on the island. It's amazing.


En faisant de la plongée avec masques et tubas, on a vu pleins de poissons, de concombres de mer et des coraux colorés (photos à faire développer). On a vu des tortues de loin, des petits requins à 2m de la plage, une énorme raie Manta de plus de 3m. C'est une très belle expérience. Un conseil, n'oubliez pas de mettre de la crème solaire sur les fesses... Mon coup de soleil est inconfortable... En tout cas, on va bien dormir cette nuit!

While snorkelling we saw colourful fishes, corals and sea cucumbers (pictures to come). We saw turtles from far away, small sharks 2m from the beach and a huge Manta ray. What a great experience. If you do it, don't forget to sunscreen your bum... My sunburn is quite uncomfortable... We will sleep well tonight!

Magical night watch

La bonne nuit de sommeil, ce n'est pas pour cette fois-çi. On a préféré rouler jusqu'à la ville de "Bon Repos" pour voir des tortues pondre sur la plage jusque 2h du matin à la lueur des étoiles. C'est un rêve qui se réalise.
The good night rest didn't happen. We went instead to the town of "Bon repos" to observe sea turtles lay eggs on the beach at starlight until 2.00 at night. It was a dream come true.

1/01/2012: 8 tortues ont pondu sur la plage: Des loggerhead turtles. 8 loggerhead turtles layed eggs on the beach that night.

On a aidé les scientifiques et conservateurs à relocaliser les oeufs en hauteur. C'est lourd un oeuf de tortue... We helped scientists to relocate eggs to higher ground. He, they are heavy! 

On y retourne quand???

Voyage - Voyage: town of 1770 [Part1]

25-26/12/2011: Christmas holidays part1.

It is our first official holidays in Australia since we arrived 6 months ago... Stijn really deserves a break. It might even be the only one until December 2012 as we plan some trips to Europe in 2012 to share great moments with our friends and family members.

C'est nos premières vacances officielles en Australie depuis notre arivée il y a de ça 6 mois déjà... Stijn mérite des vacances...

So we decided to go further than what we do during weekends and we headed towards the town of 1770 near Gladstone (Where our friend Pauline was in June 2011 ;-) ) at 6h30 North of our home. It is the closest town to the Great Barrier reef!

On a donc décidé d'explorer plus loin que ce qu'on sait faire lors d'un weekend normal. Nous sommes donc parti vers le village de 1770 près de Gladstone où Pauline était ;-) C'est à 6h30 de route. C'est le point le proche de la grande barrière de corail.

Road trips are fun. You never know what to expect.
Les voyages en voiture sont amusants, on ne saiat jamais à quoi s'attendre.

We wanted some adventure and decided to leave at the last minute without any booking for the long weekend of Christmas. Something that we never do but what the h*** we are young and we moved to the other side of the earth to live on the edge ;-)
Nous voulions de l'aventure et sommes partis en last minute sans réservation pour le weekend de Noël. C'est bien quelque chose ue nous ne faisosn jamais... On est jeunes et sommes à l'autre bout du monde pour une bonne raison: l'Aventure!

We didn't need to wait long for adventure: our best friend GPS brought us through a shortcut in farmlands where cows are on the road and by road I mean "dirt road".
Nous n'avons pas du attendre longtemps pour en avoir. Notre meilleur ami, le GPS, nous a conduit par un raccourci dans les fermes où les vaches sont sur la route. Et par route je veux dire chemin de terre.

It's great fun! Australia is so big for so few people that only main roads have a hard surface, the rest is dirt road. You realise that you are far away when even the Motorway/ highway reduces to 1 line...
C'est génial! L'Australie est tellement grande pour peu de gens alors seuls les routes principales ont un revêtement dur et on voit qu'on est loin lorsque même l'autoroute se réduit à 1 bande...

Then suddenly the GPS just shut down leaving us in the middle of nowhere. The problem is that we were further than usual and had no suitable map. Our last hope was my Iphone and Google map but farmland doesn't have signal... We then used the compas of the Iphone which works without GSM signal?! (does anyone know how it works?) and continue to drive North until we had GSM signal for Google map.
Au milieu de nullepart, le GPS nous a laché... sans carte et sans signal GSM pour Google map sur l'Iphone... Heureusement que la bousole de l'Iphone fonctionne... (Sans signal?) on a rulé jusqu'à ce qu'on ai un signal 3G pour la carte.
Ghost Town

To find a lunch can become a real quest. We drove hours without seeing a house, even in villages there was no restaurant or snack place open on the 25th of December. We then decided to go to a bigger town, Bundaberg and... No car, nobody in the street... and scariest of all... no sound at all. A real ghost town... Then we found a 24h burger place for backpackers: YES!!! I think it is our first Christmas burger...
Trouver à manger le 25 décembre est une vraie quête! On a du rouler des heures jusqu'à une ville, Bundaberg, ville fantôme en cette date! Pas une voiture, pas un bruit... Flipant! On a enfin trouvé un burger pour backpackers pour notre lunch de Noël, ça c'est une première!

Town of 1770

The town has been built on the 2nd landing place of Captain Cook in 1770. It's nice but tiny: Beach, trees and Ocean. Le village a été construit sur le lieu où le Capitaine Cook est arrivé en 1770. C'est joli mais tout petit: plage, nature et Océan... 

There is not a lot to do in the evening... especially on Christmas day... So we watched tv in a cheap backpacker motel where half of the feet of our bed were missing... Our evening dinner: coockies and a fruit.
C'est mort! surtout le soir de Noël... On a regardé la Tv dans un motel où la moitié des pieds du lit manquaient. On a juste mangé des biscuits et un fruit qu'on avait dans la voiture. Wow!

The next day we wanted to snorkel in the great barrier reef to see Nemo but it was fully booked... :-/ Let's drive back home... Le jour d'après on voulait nager à la grande barrière de corail pour voir Nemo mais il n'y avait plus de places... :-/ Bon rentrons à la maison... 

On the road again!

What a beautiful scenic! We saw all different type of Bushlands. Then we stopped at Mount Perry and found an old tunnel: the Boolboonda Tunnel. We thought walking through but luckily we took the car instead. There were plenty of small bats and the car was covered with guano...

Le moral est au beau fixe car la route est superbe. On  a traversé des bush de types différents. On s'est arrêté à Mount Perry et avons trouvé un vieu tunnel. On pensait le traverser à pied mais on a bien fait de prendre la voiture... Il y a pleins de chauves-souris et la voiture était pleine de guano...

A train went through that??? Un train passait dans ce tunel???



Shuut I'm Batman

All in all we had a great road trip! Queensland really has a lot to offer. More to come...
On a passé un excellent weekend sur la route. Le Queensland a beaucoup à offrir!
